What TYPE of Bike Should I Get?

There are two types of bikes to choose from: Adventure Bikes or Touring Bikes. (We both ride Adventure Bikes)

Portugal’s beauty lies in its winding mountain passes, cobblestone villages, and narrow coastal roads. These bikes are agile, comfortable, and versatile—built for this terrain. They let you explore every corner of Portugal the way it's meant to be ridden.

Any of the bikes below will work great for this trip (we won't do any off-road riding). If you are wondering what is most popular, hands down the most popular bikes for tours in Europe are the BMW Adventure Bikes: F 800 GS, R 1300 GS, R1300GS ADV. (Compare these three models)

What SIZE Bike Should I Get?

Individuals: Since we personally ride 650s and 700s, all the options below have plenty of power for one person.

Couples: A 1100 or 1300 would be advisable for adequate power and comfort, but it is possible on any of these bikes.

Seat Height: Pick a bike where you can place at least the balls of both feet on the ground when stopped.

Experience: You should have at least one year of experience on a bike in the same class as the rental: 450–853cc or 853–1300cc. Choose a size that allows you to be comfortable with low-speed maneuvers, U-turns, hill starts, emergency braking, and riding with luggage or a passenger, if applicable. We won't be spending time on wide interstate-style highways, so if you are unsure, choose the smaller class—you will ride more confidently and enjoy the trip more.

SAFETY GEAR

Required:

Helmet: We recommend bringing your own helmet for comfort. A GIVI Air Jet 11.1 helmet is included with the rental. (Rental full face helmet available for 36 Euro. Passenger helmet available for 20 Euro.)
Jacket: Abrasion-resistant riding jacket (armor preferred). Lightweight, summer motorcycle jackets are acceptable. (Rental available for 36 Euro)
Gloves: Full-finger motorcycle gloves. (Rental available for 24 Euro)
Pants: Heavy-duty jeans or motorcycle pants (recommended). No shorts or leggings.
Footwear: Closed-toe shoes at minimum.

Recommended but not required:

Motorcycle pants with armor. (Rental available for 36 Euro)
Over-the-ankle boots or motorcycle boots for better protection and support. (Rental available for 36 Euro)
Layers for cooler weather or a rain suit for the slight chance of rain.

Valid motorcycle license
For safety, riders should have at least one year of experience on a bike in the same class as the rental: 500–853cc or 853–1300cc.
For the safety of all participants, riders must wear full protective gear (jacket, pants, gloves, boots). Helmets are provided.
